Heat and Cold Treatments

Physiotherapists are frequently asked which is better… heat or cold?  In fact, both heat and cold treatments can be very useful in the treatment of injuries and other conditions, provided they are used correctly and at the right time.

Application of heat improves blood circulation to the area, as well as helping to ease painful muscle spasm.  Heat treatments can include:

  • Hot packs or wheat bags.
  • Deep heat machines e.g. shortwave, higher intensity ultrasound.
  • ‘Deep heat’ sprays and gels.

Cold treatments tend to be used in the early stages of injury.  Colder temperatures restrict blood flow to the area helping to limit bruising and swelling.  Cold treatments can include:

  • Ice packs
  • Topical treatments e.g. freeze spray, ‘Biofreeze’ gel.

Ask your physiotherapist about using heat and cold treatments youself at home between physiotherapy sessions for a speedier recovery.
